First Day, First Impressions

The campus and everything in it is pretty amazing. I’ll try to put a photoset together.

Work itself never really got going because my manager wasn’t in. An apparel development teammate introduced me to everyone in the office and I subsequently forgot everyone’s name in the office. I spent the morning/whole day having my computer fixed by IT, applying for server access and glancing over random excel spreadsheets. Lots of fun was had..

I think I’ll have a proper first day when my manager’s back

Moving Day

Flight at 12:15. Almost there.

Accommodation became a bit of nightmare and means I’m flying over there without anything technically set in stone. I do however have a room viewing immediately upon arrival so let’s hope that works out!

See you in a few months England

Disaster #1

Having decided Utrecht is the place for me I came within a hair’s breadth of securing a great place with a fellow Nike intern from France.

5 minutes to midnight the night before we were set to sign he pulled out because he needed accommodation that was available sooner.

No problem, I thought, loads of people are looking for a place. And they were but everything has gotten a bit tricky and it looks like I’m back to square one with not long to go. The hunt is back on to find a place and the clock is ticking.

Hup Holland Hup

Amsterdam vs Utrecht

With all the paperwork done and set aside my efforts have been firmly focused on finding somewhere in the Netherlands to live.

Nike’s HQ is located easterly in Hilversum, a small town with not a lot going on. Now, Something sounding eerily similar to Loughborough is not what I want from these 6 months (or possibly 1 year) so I figured I’d cast the net a bit wider and look at the nearby cities. Enter into the frame Utrecht and the capital city Amsterdam. Having had no previous encounters with either place makes the decision extremely difficult but there are some obvious figures I can compare ie. Accommodation Price, Cost of Living, Distance to Work etc. The sensible option for all these points me towards Utrecht but I just can’t seem to shake the voice in my head that simply, but effectively, argues “Yeah, but it’s not Amsterdam”.

I’ve read a few blogs and articles that in return argue Utrecht is more of a true Dutch experience; an Amsterdam without all the commercialisation and tourism. It shares all the beauty of its big sister and can boast about having the only inner-city canal in the world with wharfs. All the happiness is here. All the culture is here. All the coffee shops still sell the same stuff.

Yeah, but it’s not Amsterdam.

I guess I’ll have to wait and see what happens.
