Amsterdam vs Utrecht

With all the paperwork done and set aside my efforts have been firmly focused on finding somewhere in the Netherlands to live.

Nike’s HQ is located easterly in Hilversum, a small town with not a lot going on. Now, Something sounding eerily similar to Loughborough is not what I want from these 6 months (or possibly 1 year) so I figured I’d cast the net a bit wider and look at the nearby cities. Enter into the frame Utrecht and the capital city Amsterdam. Having had no previous encounters with either place makes the decision extremely difficult but there are some obvious figures I can compare ie. Accommodation Price, Cost of Living, Distance to Work etc. The sensible option for all these points me towards Utrecht but I just can’t seem to shake the voice in my head that simply, but effectively, argues “Yeah, but it’s not Amsterdam”.

I’ve read a few blogs and articles that in return argue Utrecht is more of a true Dutch experience; an Amsterdam without all the commercialisation and tourism. It shares all the beauty of its big sister and can boast about having the only inner-city canal in the world with wharfs. All the happiness is here. All the culture is here. All the coffee shops still sell the same stuff.

Yeah, but it’s not Amsterdam.

I guess I’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Truth be told I did skip a couple of days over the weekend to say goodbye to my good friend moonface Alex who is embarking on an adventure of her own to Miami University for the year. On Saturday we went into Manchester and for some reason I chose a look of disdain in all of our photos together. Sunday was spent nursing a hangover drinking Gin and eating BBQ food before the night turned cold and I turned homeless. It was all quite lovely

A Paperwork Filled Beginning

As you can see my plan to post everyday has been a bit of a struggle but I can happily say to you (and myself) that I have completed some new forms and sent some new emails to the relevant recipients, slowly moving me closer to…

  • an ERASMUS grant
  • another Student Finance Maintenance Loan
  • and the finalised paperwork of my Placement

Ongoing boring activities to check off on my list include

  • Finding a willing replacement for my premature Student Accommodation commitment

It is a start at least

The Countdown Begins

Recently this place has become a pretty empty space for me. Nowadays I tend to just scroll through blogs, like the odd thing and reblog on average about once a month. I can’t really remember the last time I actually contributed a post.

But as of today, August 1st, I thought I’d change that. See, since even more recently, I’ve been hired as an intern at Nike. Not bad eh? With my first day in the real world of work starting on September 1st in Hilversum, Holland there’s plenty of stuff to take care of between now and then.

I’ll be documenting my 6 or 12 month adventure via my newly active Instagram account (which you can find here), but to make sure I don’t waste this month and keep myself on track I plan to post everyday. This could be something as mundane as completed paperwork (like today) or maybe something I made on Illustrator, I don’t know… just as long as I haven’t wasted a day doing nothing.

Enjoy.
